    Description

RARE unique 1930's Red Lion Hillbillies/ Cow Mountain Hillbillies 6 item lot:  5 original/ period photos and an original 1930's concert/ promo poster.
This 1930's cowboy hillbilly band was based out of the Ukiah, CA /Mendocino County area.  The band was started in 1933 by Estell Allen, who owned a Gilmore gas station in "the forks" area.   Originally named the Cow Mountain Hillbillies, they were discovered by a local Gilmore Oil rep and shortly thereafter were sponsored by the oil company and renamed the Red Lion Hillbillies to promote Gilmore Oil and their popular Red Lion gasoline brand.  While sponsored by the Gilmore Oil Co., they were regular performers on the Gilmore Circus Radio Show that aired on NBC radio.   They toured primarily in California but also in Idaho, Utah, Oregon and Washington playing mostly town theaters- which is where I suspect the poster is from.
The poster measures approx. 11" x 14" and is excellent condition overall with minor wear and a small stain spot that is shown in one of the supplied photos.  The photos measure approx. 8" x 10" and all have a crease along a side (see photos).  I have stored/ displayed the poster in a Riker Mount case, which is included, and poster will be shipped in for extra protection.
