    Description

GEORGE GEMUNDER JR. VIOLIN, LABELED "REPAIRED BY", 27 UNION SQ NEW YORK CITY 1892
    .
This violin inside is signed by hand  "repaired by" on a  printed label "George Gemunder Jr. fine violins, bows, strings, cases, violin maker and repairer, 27 union square, then hand signed anddated New York City" 1892. Parts as repaired by and date are signed by hand, the George has a wear smudge. Maybe this violin was sold by George Gemunder Jr. and it was  repaired by his shop at a later date, thus "repaired by" being
    hand
written - this is just my opinion form your own opinion. The date is May 2, 1892 . The violin has had a bit of repair near the neck as shown in the ribs. There are hairlines upper right bout and lower bout both sides. Very fine hairlines, they do not move, I do not know if this is part of the original repair or not. The measurements of the violin are lower bout 7 3/4", upper bout 6 1/4" the back of the violin measures 14" . The total length of the instrument is 23 1/2" . Super one piece tiger maple back. The sides and the neck are also very nice tiger maple. As shown in the photo, the neck is extreme tiger and the head is not as it was grafted on. Older violins had neck grafts from an era when the necks were shorter, around 1840 or earlier.
Strings look like they are in good condition, looks to be color twists.  This violin came with an abalone and silver inlaid frog on a bow. I am keeping these together since they have been together this long.  The tip on the bow is broken off and will need repaired,(I do not have the tip)no markings on the bow. They do make kits to repair and replace a bow end, or just use the frog which has outstanding work.  Great opportunity to buy a piece of history and a fabulous violin. The violin comes with the old original case, leather covering on shell worn off mostly on bottom but top's not bad, and the latches work.  Slight diamond embossed in leather on top. They were fine American violin makers the Gemunders
