Day of the Dead Frida Kahlo Cantina Party Original Folk Art Mexican Ex-Voto Painting
This retablo is a handmade painting – an original piece of Mexican folk art. The artist tells a story of thanks in words and picture. It is all hand painted directly onto the tin.
The artist asks for the following from the Virgin of Guadalupe: (loosely translated)
“In the Pulqueria [bar] of Don Juan some souls with sorrows appeared. We ask the Virgin of Guadalupe to understand. El Muerto Al Pozo El Vivo Al Gozo. [The dead goes to the well and the living enjoys]”
The tin is painted in bright colors and all characters are painted in skeleton – Day of the Dead style. Frida is represented as the woman with the pink skirt. You can see the Virgin in the upper right hand corner, looking down on Frida and her friends dancing, drinking and playing music.
The tin sign measures just about 11 inches across x 7-3/4 inches in height.
This is an original piece of artwork, bought from the artist's representative in Mexico.
The piece of tin used is not rigid. There may be light and camera shadows showing in the photo of the back of the tin. Because this is a handmade piece of art on a piece of scrap metal and because of the type of art, the artist intended irregularities, uneven edges, slight bends in the tin, some rust, scratches and paint splotches.
